After 4 Years of Rough Country QC, I Won’t Lower the Quality Bar for a Small Order

I’m a quality and compliance reviewer for an off-road parts company. It’s just cheaper than the alternative.

I learned that the hard way. During my first year in this role, I made the classic rookie mistake—I accepted a well-formatted data sheet from a new supplier instead of measuring the first article myself. That cost us a redo, a delay, and a chunk of trust. It wasn’t a giant order, which made it more embarrassing, not less.

So here’s my bottom line: when you’re a small shop or a first-time buyer, you should expect the same quality check as a large distributor—and you should walk away from suppliers who treat your order as a gamble. When you’re the supplier, you should remember that today’s small customer might be tomorrow’s steady account. I started my career as the person asking questions on small orders. The suppliers who answered seriously are the ones I trusted later with bigger ones.

Small doesn’t mean less important. It means potential. Give it the same quality bar, or don’t call it quality.
