This checklist comes from six years of managing coating and parts budgets for a 14-person auto restoration and detailing shop in the Southeast. We've logged over 300 coating jobs, and we've made most of the mistakes once so you don't have to.

If you're about to spend money on a ceramic coating for a daily driver, a weekend classic like a 1967 Chevy C10 step side, or a work truck that also pulls a trailer, stop and read this first. I'm going to show you how to think about Gtechniq ceramic coating from a total-cost angle, and exactly how to apply it the way we do in the shop.

Here's the short version: there are six steps. None of them are hard. The decision is harder than the application.

First, answer the question: how long does Gtechniq ceramic coating last?

Honestly? Somewhere between "longer than wax" and "not as long as the marketing wants you to believe." Gtechniq publishes expected durability ranges in their technical data sheets. In our experience, those numbers are realistic if—and only if—the paint is prepped correctly and the vehicle is maintained properly.

We track every coating job in our shop management system. That data shows a huge spread: we've seen coatings fail in about 18 months on cars that sit outside and go through automatic washes. We've also seen them go past five years on garaged classics that get hand washed twice a month. So, how long does Gtechniq ceramic coating last? It depends on product selection, surface prep, storage, and wash habits. Not on magic.

Run the TCO numbers before you buy anything

As a procurement manager, I look at every coating purchase as an investment with a lifespan, not a product with a price. The total cost of ownership (TCO) for a coating is: product cost, prep supplies, labor hours, maintenance products, and reapplication cost and downtime.

That $40 bottle of wax looks cheaper than a $70 ceramic coating kit. But over three years, you're buying wax repeatedly and paying someone to apply it. If you plan to keep the vehicle that long, the coating usually becomes the lower-TCO option. If you're only keeping the car for a year, skip the coating and use a spray sealant. That's a context call, not a rule.

Before you buy, check the maintenance requirements. Some coatings need a dedicated pH-neutral soap and maybe a monthly spray sealant. Add that to the TCO. If you won't maintain it, a cheap spray sealant may be the smarter purchase.

For a typical crew cab pickup, we budget around $80–$120 in Gtechniq product and prep materials, plus 4–6 hours of shop labor if the paint is in good shape. If you're doing it yourself, your cost is product plus your own time—and time is still a cost. Calculate your own numbers before you judge the price. The cheapest quote is rarely the lowest total cost. The same logic applies to every part on the truck, from the air intake coupling to the trailer hitch shank.

How to apply Gtechniq ceramic coating: the checklist we use

You don't need to be a pro painter, but you do need to follow the process. Below are the six steps we use on every vehicle, from a daily driver to a 1967 Chevy C10 step side.

Step 1: Strip wash and decontaminate

Don't skip this. A coating bonds to paint, not to old wax or fallout. Start with a pH-neutral wash, then an iron remover, then a clay bar. On an old truck, you'll be amazed what comes off the vertical panels.

Checkpoint: run a plastic baggy over the paint. If it doesn't feel rough, you're done with decontamination.

Step 2: Polish—but only as much as needed

From a cost perspective, chasing a perfect finish is where coating jobs go over budget. You don't need a mirror shine. You need a clean, uniform surface. We do a test spot, then only polish defects in that zone.

On a big crew cab, compounding the whole truck can take six hours. Or rather, closer to four with a proper machine and good technique. Don't pay for perfection unless the customer is paying for it too.

Step 3: Set up a clean, dry, shaded work area

Most coating failures we've seen come from application conditions. Gtechniq coatings need stable temperature, low humidity, and good lighting. We once did a job in direct sun. The coating flashed too fast and left high spots. That meant a re-do, and re-do costs are the worst kind.

If you're working in a garage, wait for a cool part of the day. If you're outside, find shade or set up a pop-up canopy.

Step 4: Apply in small sections

Put a small amount of coating on the applicator, then spread it in a crosshatch pattern. Work one panel at a time. Don't pour it on—more product does not equal more protection.

For a 1967 Chevy C10 step side, the bed sides and roof are the easiest zones to leave too thick because they're large flat areas. Take your time.

Step 5: Wait, then wipe off residue

Here's the thing: if you miss the residue window, you'll be polishing off dried coating instead of leveling a wet film. Set a timer, or follow the Gtechniq instruction for your specific product. Our rule of thumb: if you see a rainbow smear, you're too late.

Step 6: Let it cure, then log the job

Let the coating cure before rain, washing, or hauling anything. Then write down what you applied, when, and what maintenance products you used.

We didn't have a formal coating log at first. Cost us when a customer said their coating failed at 14 months and we had no record of what we applied. Now every job goes into the system with a photo and a maintenance schedule. Don't skip this step.

Two "hidden line items" that can eat your coating budget

Before you book the coating job, look at the rest of the vehicle. We've had more "cheap" projects turn expensive because of small parts that should have been handled first.

Replace the crusty rubber parts before coating, not after

If your project is a 1967 Chevy C10 step side, check the rubber parts under the hood before you polish anything. That old air intake coupling is often dry-rotted and cracked. Replacing it is a $25 part and a 15-minute job if you do it before the coating is applied. If you do it after, you're paying a technician to lean over fresh coating and maybe scratch a fender. We replace those parts first, then coat.

Know your trailer hitch hardware before you order anything

And if the vehicle is a tow rig, understand the receiver before you buy a hitch. What is a shank on a trailer hitch? It's the steel bar that slides into the receiver. Shanks come in different lengths and diameters, and the drop has to put your ball at the right height for the trailer.

Buy the wrong shank and you'll eat return shipping plus a restocking fee. That's pure TCO waste. Measure your receiver and trailer tongue height first, then order once.

The honest bottom line

Gtechniq ceramic coating is a solid investment if you understand what "solid" means. It lasts years, not forever. The application is doable at home, but prep is where the value lives.

And don't ask me which coating product is "best." It depends on the paint condition, your environment, and your budget. For most of our customers, a standard Gtechniq coating with a two-year maintenance plan beats a top-tier coating they never maintain.

This approach worked for us because we're a small shop with predictable work. If you're coating a fleet of work trucks in a dusty environment, your results and your costs will be different. My experience is based on about 300 mostly daily-driver and classic-truck jobs. I can't speak to commercial fleet applications beyond what I've read.

Prep the paint. Apply in sections. Wipe off on time. That's it.
